I know this fabulous lady, who had a baby in February, and just think he's the cat's meow. She likes to have photos of him, OFTEN :) And she's extra awesome, because she also wanted to give some of her friends the opportunity to have some family photos taken. I've had an advertisement up on this blog for quite some time, offering "Belly Parties." My thought, five years ago, when we moved to UT and really wanted to make a go of pursuing my photography business as our main means of employment, was that I could encourage pregnant women to hold some "pampering" days, a tea, a bbq, a baby shower, or just a quiet "mom-to-be" get together, and everyone would be treated to a customized mini maternity portrait session, while others visited and enjoyed time together. I never really advertised the idea, other than on my business blog, and I'd never had anyone ask about it. Then, Cindy asked if I'd consider doing a family photo party at her place. I've done a few fundraisers, where we do mini-sessions, so I've been able to work out the logistics of photographing small groups within a larger group, and I was excited about this. It happened to be an overcast day, but not too cold, so we were able to use areas in and outdoors. The photo party provided two baby bellies, tons of adorable little people, and several family shoots. Cindy provided snacks and a "tea" set up. It was a lot of fun for everyone.

McDonald Family

We had some rains in May, which caused the cancellation and reschedule of a couple of photo shoots, in fact, one shoot would be pushed from April all the way to July. But the McDonald family and I only pushed our shoot back ONE day, from a Saturday to a Sunday, to avoid soggy grass and cooler temperatures (and grumpy kids too). We had a fantastic time at Red Butte Gardens, just wandering around and enjoying the seasonal fauna. You might not believe that this teenage boy wouldn't want his photo taken :) But for someone who wasn't excited about being photographed, he sure photographs amazingly well. Perhaps it's the truth in his expressions and the refusal to smile?Kids, at any age, people, at any age, must be who they are in a photo, if one is to believe that photo. I often tell parents not to worry about how their children are feeling about the session or behaving, because those moments ARE their children, not stiff posed family photos, but laughter and smirks, smelling a flower, running wild, grumping and glaring. . .that's what I want to capture for you. . . Quiet?

I had a quiet few months from late February until early May. Quiet in the sense that I wasn't photographing much, not quiet, in the sense that there were six states to touch down in. Our first was a trip to IN (where I believe we crossed state lines to see friends at least twice, into KY and IL) where we met our beautiful new niece, welcomed home for a visit, our nephew, who is a Marine, and enjoyed having my husband's ENTIRE family home together at once. From Indiana we headed directly to Texas, to visit old friends, and witness the graduation of some of our beloved friends as well. Back on the ground for a couple of weeks, my daughters and I were off to WA for a week, home for two, I celebrated my 30th birthday, then we were off to CA for 9 days. So. . . sure, it was quiet, as far as employment, but there was no shortage of things to see, people to hug, and places to be.

Simon: Newborn

Little Simon came a day earlier than his scheduled entrance. I think I photographed the family about two weeks after the last time I'd been there, he was about 10 days old (which meant I'd only caught his mama's belly by two or three days!). What a sweet little family. I think these two were still in shock and awe that this little wonder was all theirs. I don't know where those babies are that let you put them down and pose them strangely while they slumber, because I've never met one. Simon had NO desire for his mama to put him down, and it took many efforts and nursing sessions to let us get any of these photos of him on the bed without squeals of displeasure.

Samurauw Maternity Shoot

I visit the dentist every six months. I was there in October, and learned that my dentist was due to have her first baby in February. I offered for her to call as the time drew near, I can never pass up opportunity to encourage a woman to have her belly photographed. It's just such an amazing time, something to be reminded, after baby comes, how one's body can grow and change to accommodate such a little wonder. I didn't hear from her, so I thought she'd decided not to have the photos done, or gone with someone else, then I get an email a week before her scheduled cesarean, asking if I'd be available (on Superbowl Sunday) to photograph this final stage of her body's transformation. OF COURSE I WOULD. It was a crisp day in early February, but they have a beautiful home, providing plenty of options for indoor photographs to be taken. We had a great time trying different areas of the home. Her mother was also here from Indonesia, awaiting arrival of this little person (and is still here 11 months later). A few special photos of three generations to-be.

Jet's Birth January 16, 2011

This is how I started my year! My friend Mali, in labor at 9pm, I waited up until my usual bedtime of 2am, thinking I'd hear from them before that. . . as I drifted off into a deep sleep, my phone rang and woke me with a start. . . but the excitement and adrenaline had me up and awake and dressing myself and my sleeping 17 month old baby, texting a friend to watch her at the hospital, risking my life over icy landscape from house to car, and on the road in less than 30 minutes. It would be nearly 6 more hours before this little guy entered the world, causing all sorts of trouble on the way. I can't believe I was asked to be part of something SO incredible! Not only as a photographer, but as a mother and as a friend. This little boy is something quite special in our lives (11 months later). Eventually I will take my business more in the way of birth, when my own family doesn't still need me in the night, and this was my first taste of how amazing that time will be, when it comes. Not all of my entries will be stories, in words or photographs, but this was quite the way to start out my year, photographically speaking. Thank you, dear friends, for this opportunity!

Switching Up How It's Done

I've always used this blog as is, as a website, not adding to it when I do actual work! But I'm going to change that, make it into more of a portfolio for myself, made easier by the web hosting for the images used on blogger, having expanded a bit. So here it goes. . .

A little over two years ago, I moved the focus of my business to photographing babies, bellies and ehem, breasts (aka Nursing portraits). I've been able to hold fundraisers and raise money for World Breastfeeding Week, in August for two years now. This year I also gave away free micro-portrait sessions at an event called "Milk For Thought." I gave away a few sittings to silent auction and drawings, all to promote breastfeeding awareness and involvement. I am SO enjoying this part of my work. In October, I had request for my work to be used in two different slide shows, for education, and for an article in Leaven, which is a leader publication for La Leche League. I hope that some of my work will be cover art for said publication, in the near future. In general, it seems most of my photo sessions are still family sessions, which usually include a nursing portrait or two during the session.

Let's start with 2011 shall we? Now that it's almost to a close :)

I have created an entirely separate site focused on my photography speciality: Mothering (Maternity, Newborn and Nursing portraits). Consider hosting a belly party to capture some special memories of your pregnancy and then coming back for newborn photos to capture all of baby's tiny new parts. Nursing photos are recommended at various stages throughout the nursing relationship, to look back on and and be reminded of how quickly the mother/child nursing style and relationship changes.
